Herpestes
There are 2 species known from Tanzania: Herpestes ichneumon (the Egyptian mongoose) and Herpestes sanguinea (the Slender mongoose). The black tip to the tail of Herpestes ichneumon causes some people to call it the black-tipped mongoose. Herpestes sanguinea is variable in coat color and is often melanistic.
